England riots: a message from NCVO's chief executive

Dear Libby,

Over the past week, racist extremists – whose sole aim is to create fear, division and chaos – have rioted across the country. Make no mistake, these are not protests or free speech. They are acts of violence perpetrated by thugs, in an attempt to fan the flames of racial hate and islamophobia.

This is a distressing time for us all – both as individuals, and as committed workers and volunteers in a sector that is focused on building community and belonging. And this is an especially difficult time for our colleagues and friends from the global majority who have been made to feel unsafe in their own communities.

As civil society, we will continue demonstrating unwavering commitment to those who are marginalised. And we must continue to work towards a more tolerant and anti-racist society – learning from the many charities who are working tirelessly in this space.

We have also co-signed, alongside other charity leaders, a statement from the Civil Society Group which you can read here.

Access advice and support

Many charities have been affected by recent events, and we know some of you will be afraid of being targeted in the days ahead. If you feel threatened, please seek advice from the police or your local authority, who will be working as part of the Local Resilience Forum.

Additionally, we’re sharing the following resources to help you navigate the ongoing situation:

  • Watch our recent webinar recordings on responding to opposition and communicating in a crisis.

  • Read our free guidance on how to manage risk.

  • Read the CIPD's advice on supporting your workforce through a crisis.

  • Misinformation is rife across social media, so we would advise against sharing any content without ensuring it's from an official or verified resource. Instead, please seek guidance and support from local emergency services and your Local Resilience Forum. Watch our video for advice.

  • The VCS Emergencies Partnership provides space and opportunity for local and national voluntary and community organisations to come together, ensuring support effectively reaches those in need.

  • For those who want to donate to support the Southport community, read the Charity Commission's recent guidance on giving with confidence to registered charities.

  • Over the coming days, we’ll see more information and guidance coming out – including from the Charity Commission – and we’ll share anything useful on our social channels. Make sure you’re following on Instagram, X and LinkedIn for more news and updates.

There will undoubtedly be a large amount of work being done by some of our amazing members as a result of these riots. We will use our voice to make sure their work is heard. I am sure we will all benefit from their expertise, experience and knowledge as we continue to work towards a more tolerant and anti-racist society.

I hope that you, your team and volunteers are able to stay safe. In the days and weeks ahead, please know that you are not alone. The whole NCVO team stands with you.
